Pedestrian struck on Highway 1 in Burnaby

Man in his 50s or 60s rushed to trauma care in critical condition

A pedestrian was rushed to hospital in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle on Highway 1 in Burnaby Friday morning.

Emergency crews were called to the westbound lanes of the highway just before the Grandview Highway off ramp at about 7:20 a.m. for a pedestrian struck, according to the Burnaby Fire Department.

Assistant fire Chief Greg Young said crews found a man between 50 and 60 years old who had been hit.

Advanced life-support paramedics rushed the man to hospital in critical condition, according to BC Emergency Health Services.

The driver of the vehicle apparently involved in the collision – a BMW sedan that sustained significant damage to its windshield – was not taken to hospital, according to BCEHS.

The Port Mann Highway Patrol, which is investigating the crash, told the NOW speed and impairment have been ruled out as factors in the crash.
