Photos: First elementary x-country season since pandemic wraps in Burnaby

The cross-country season marked the first full-fledged return for elementary sports in Burnaby since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Burnaby’s first elementary school cross-country season since COVID-19 wrapped up Monday.

Hundreds of students in Grades 4 to 7 have gathered weekly behind the Burnaby Lake Rugby Club off Sperling Avenue since Sept. 12 to test their mettle on a course beside Burnaby Lake.

The fourth and final meet took place Monday afternoon.

The return of cross-country marks the first full-fledged return for elementary sports, many of which were cancelled completely during the pandemic.

Typically, elementary sports include cross-country, basketball, volleyball and track.

For cross-country, students train at their schools and then meet at Burnaby Lake to race.

The district said there was a “very high level of interest” in cross-country this year.
