Photos: Jaws of life used to save driver in Coquitlam collision with dump truck

They were taken to hospital with minor injuries from the Lougheed Highway crash.

A driver sustained minor injuries following a crash involving a dump truck in Coquitlam on Thursday (March 2).

Mounties responded to a reported two-vehicle collision around 2:15 p.m. near the intersection of Lougheed Highway (7) and Dewdney Trunk Road.

While factors that led to the incident are not known, photos sent to Tri-City News appear to show that it took place just north of the four-way in the northbound lanes.

Coquitlam firefighters needed to use the jaws of life and other equipment to extract the driver of a four-door sedan, according to witnesses.

They were then taken to hospital by paramedics to be treated for injuries.

According to ICBC, there were 240 reported collisions at Highway 7 and Dewdney Trunk Road between 2017 and 2021, which included cases of property damage, serious injury or worse.

That's the highest of any intersection along the city's three-kilometre thoroughfare that stretches from Viewmount Drive to Westwood Street.

The provincial corporation's latest stats show 8,700 crashes in the Lower Mainland in 2021 involving a heavy vehicle, including 14 fatal and 2,100 that injured one or more victims.

RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Alexa Hodgins said officers are looking for dashcam footage to help with the investigation into the March 2 incident.
