Pipe band second at worlds

The Simon Fraser University Pipe Band took second place at the World Pipe Band championships Aug. 13 in Glasgow, Scotland.

"We gave our absolute best effort on both performances and feel very satisfied with the job we did," said Pipe Sergeant Jack Lee, after congratulating rival band Field Marshal Montgomery from Northern Ireland, which took first. Last year the band finished second over third-place SFU. Scottish band Scottish Power finished third.

The band has now placed second nine times - the most "seconds" for any band, said Lee - and won six championships, including 2008 and 2009, since it began competing in 1983.

The event, which drew 50,000 spectators, took place for the most part under partly cloudy skies, despite a forecast of rain.

Since the early '90s, the band has often placed in the top three spots in world competition. The group formed in 1966 and now has more than 40 members.
