Pipeline protesters bringing fight to Burnaby MP's doorstep

Burnaby Residents Opposing Kinder Morgan Expansion plan demonstration for Terry Beech's office
Terry Beech
Terry Beech, a former Nanaimo city councillor, is running for the Liberals in Burnaby North-Seymour.

Activists plan to bring their fight to stop the purchase of the Trans Mountain pipeline by the Canadian government to the member of parliament whose riding includes the terminus of the controversial project on Burnaby Mountain.

The Burnaby Residents Opposing Kinder Morgan Expansion have planned a protest at Liberal MP Terry Beech’s office Monday afternoon. The event will be part of a “National Day of Action to Stop the Kinder Morgan Buyout.”

Similar demonstrations are planned across the country Monday.

“The sale won’t be finalized for at least a month, and if there’s a massive backlash from voters, it could be enough to force Trudeau to reconsider this outrageous buyout scheme,” the Facebook event page reads.

The page encourages attendees to “bring signs, banners and your voices.”

The planned protest comes after Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government announced a plan on May 29 to buy the pipeline for $4.5 billion. The move was met by approval by many proponents of the project and outrage by its many opponents.

Beech, the MP for Burnaby-North Seymour, recently told the Now he feels compelled to represent his constituents whom he believes are mostly opposed to the Trans Mountain expansion despite his party’s approval of it.
