A mental health call sparked a large police presence at a 21-storey South Burnaby highrise Sunday.

A resident at 7368 Sandborne Ave. said eight RCMP vehicles, a transit police vehicle and a fire truck responded to the apartment, and emergency crews temporarily blocked entry to the building.

Burnaby RCMP said officers were dealing with a mental health incident.

Police had been called to the building at 4:30 p.m. for reports of an invidual threatening self-harm.

Burnaby RCMP put out a call for a trained negotiator on duty in the area, and an officer with Metro Vancouver Transit Police responded.

The incident was resolved just after 5:30 p.m. when the individual was apprehended under the Mental Health Act, police said.
