Burnaby RCMP are investigating what they believe was a potential home invasion Sunday morning.

Police said someone tried to gain entry to a basement suite in the 900-block of Duthie Avenue at approximately 6:12 a.m. but instead broke a window and deployed pepper spray into the residence.

A car at the home was also damaged, with a window broken and tires slashed, said Burnaby RCMP Staff Sgt. Dave Eidet.

"We haven't yet come up with a motive," said Eidet.

The residents of the home, who the police have had dealings with previously, are co-operating with the investigation.
