Police still looking for killers of man found dead in Burnaby a year ago

23-year-old Randy Chan's remains discovered inside burned-out vehicle brought to Mundie's Towing yard last July

Homicide investigators are appealing to the public for help solving the case of a Coquitlam man whose remains were found in a Burnaby tow yard one year ago.

Randy Chan, 23, was reported missing on July 24, 2020, having last been seen two days earlier.

On July 27, 2020, an ICBC investigator discovered what were later confirmed to be Chan’s remains in a burned-out vehicle that had been towed to Mundie’s Towing on Thorne Avenue in the Big Bend area.

Police believe his killing was targeted, but homicide investigators are still working to identify those responsible one year later.

“There are people out there with information,” stated an Integrated Homicide Investigation Team news release Wednesday. “IHIT is appealing to those people, including friends and close associates of Mr. Chan, to contact IHIT and come forward.”

Earlier police news releases said Chan had had “a significant police history,” but the most recent IHIT release said his friends and family describe him as a “loving, generous son, brother and family member.”

“This young man’s life was taken from those who loved him,” IHIT Sgt. David Lee said in the release. “We can never forget that these incidents affect so many lives. It’s never too late to do the right thing.”
