Police still searching for mother of dead newborn

Baby's body was found in the Fraser River in South Burnaby last October

It's been more than six months since the body of a newborn baby boy was found floating amongst the log booms in the Fraser River, just off a railway bridge in South Burnaby.

And according to integrated homicide investigation team spokesperson Sgt. Jennifer Pound, the police still don't have much to go on.

Pound told the Burnaby NOW on April 17 that IHIT investigators still have not found the mother of the baby boy and they're still doing extensive testing on the baby.

Pound said they haven't identified the baby yet, but added, "That's not unusual because of the amount of extra testing we are doing."

The body of the newborn baby boy was discovered floating in the Fraser River late on the evening of Oct. 11 last year by a tugboat crew.

"Our tug was delivering a small tow just upriver of the railroad bridge," Harken Towing manager John Bowles told The Province. "When they arrived there, they found the body floating in one of the booms that was already being stored there."

When the tugboat crew first noticed the newborn's body, they believed it to be a doll.

The railway bridge is just off Fraser Park Drive and a correctional facility in South Burnaby.

Pound asked possible witnesses to call the IHIT tip line at 1-877-551-4448 or CrimeStoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
