Ponder the political and personal at café event

Should the lives of politicians be private or public? Is it fair to cut their careers short because of real or perceived personal problems? Should morals and religion reflect on one's professional conduct? These are some of the questions to mull over

Should the lives of politicians be private or public? Is it fair to cut their careers short because of real or perceived personal problems? Should morals and religion reflect on one's professional conduct? These are some of the questions to mull over at the next Philosophers' Café on Burnaby Mountain on Sept. 5.

The event is at Nature's Garden Organic Deli at 8968 University High St., next to the SFU campus. PhD student Jason Carreiro will moderate, and you don't have to be an expert in philosophy to participate.

The Philosophers' Café is a series of public discus-sions on a variety of philosophical issues. Everyone is welcome to attend, and it's free.

Read and eat

Local library branches are selling tickets for the summer reading club's annual pancake breakfast fundraiser. On Saturday, Sept. 8, the Burnaby Public Library is expecting nearly 1,000 kids to collect their medals at a special ceremony at Civic Square, just outside the Bob Prittie Metrotown branch. The children receive the medals for participating in the library's summer reading program.

There will be entertainment and activities from 9 to 10: 45 a.m., and the medal ceremony starts at 11 a.m. Before the ceremony, the library will host a pancake breakfast, and funds raised go to the library's children's collection. Tickets, available at any library branch, are $5 for adults or $2 for children 12 and under. For more information, call 604436-5420.
