Burnaby RCMP are issuing a public warning after a scammer posed as a victim services employee.

In a news release on Wednesday (April 5), police said they received a fraud report from a man in his 80s on March 27.

The senior, who had lost money to a different scam last summer, told police he received a phone call from a person that claimed to work for Burnaby RCMP's victim services team.

The woman on the other side claimed she could help him recover the money he had lost.

The scammer provided the legitimate Burnaby RCMP Victim Services phone number to the man as a callback number.

But the man realized it was most likely a scam when the caller couldn't provide any identification.

"We would like to recognize this senior for identifying this as a scam and coming forward to police. We are continuing to investigate this file," said spokesperson Cpl. Mike Kalanj.

"It's disgusting to see a scammer posing as a Victim Services employee while trying to defraud this senior for a second time."

Anyone who receives suspicious phone calls from someone who claims to work for the Burnaby RCMP, including victim services, is urged to hang up and call the non-emergency line at 604-646-9999.
