Burnaby Mounties believe they are getting closer to finding the man responsible for a trio of sexual assaults at the beginning of the month.

The local force said it has received tips from the public since warning residents last week about the assaults in the Edmonds area.

“We’re making progress on the case,” Burnaby RCMP Sgt. Derek Thibodeau told the NOW, adding there hasn’t been any incidents since last week.

Police are still asking anyone with information to call the local detachment.

The first two alleged assaults, which were 20 minutes apart, were reported on Sept. 1. The women said they were walking along Mary Avenue and 16th Street when an unknown man approached them from behind and pulled their pants down to the ground. When the women turned around, the suspect took off on foot. The description of the suspect was similar in both cases.

The suspect was described as a medium-skinned man in his late teens to early 20s, standing five feet seven inches to 10-inches tall, with a thin build and prominent dark eyebrows. The suspect was also wearing a black baseball hat, black hoody and dark jeans.

On Saturday morning, police were once again called out to a report of a sexual assault, this time in the 7400 block of Kingsway. The woman told police she was walking down an alley when a man approached her from behind and grabbed her buttocks. When she turned around, the man ran away.

The suspect was described as a light-skinned man, standing five-feet seven to five-feet nine inches tall with a thin build. He was wearing a red jacket and blue jeans.

None of the women were physically injured in the incidents.

Earlier this year, local Mounties were busy trying to solve a rash of more serious sexual assaults along a popular Burnaby trail.

Two assaults occurred in daylight along the Burnaby Mountain Urban Trail. On Feb. 18, a woman was walking along a path on the urban trail when she was approached by a man and sexually assaulted.

On March 6 a woman had just left the Lake City Way SkyTrain station and was walking on the trail when she was approached by an unknown man and sexually assaulted. In both cases, the women were taken to hospital for treatment.

In May, the RCMP announced two charges of assault against Michal Popek, 36, related to the two incidents.
