The Burnaby RCMP announced last Wednesday they had shut down two suspected marijuana grow operations.
Both operations took place on June 19, with one in North Burnaby at a home on Duthie Avenue, and the second in the Metrotown area, in an apartment on Silver Avenue.
In the first operation, the Burnaby RCMP's drug section executed a search warrant on the Duthie Avenue home and discovered the grow operation in the basement. Police discovered an electrical bypass, numerous propane tanks and the basement was airtight because of steel barricades placed over the windows and doors, causing dangerously high carbon dioxide levels.
In the second operation, the drug section executed a search warrant on a threestorey wood-framed apartment on Silver Avenue. During this operation, police observed holes in the drywall and foul air from the grow operation was being pumped into the interior structure of the building.
"If this grow operation was not located when it was, moisture would have built up in the walls, leading to dangerous black mould throughout the building's structure," Cpl. Stephen Bolt of the Burnaby RCMP's drug section said in a press release. "The public needs to know that marijuana grow operations are not safe. They pose a very real danger to public safety."
