Burnaby RCMP confirmed human remains were found in the woods off a trail in the area, and investigators are now waiting for the coroner to confirm the identity. Local resident John Preissl took these photos of RCMP at the entrance to a trail off Gaglardi Way Monday morning.

Remains found on Burnaby Mountain Sunday might be that of a man reported missing earlier this year, according to Burnaby RCMP.

The remains were found by two bikers riding on a closed section of trail off Gaglardi Way, said local resident John Preissl.

The Burnaby RCMP confirmed remains were found near a trail off Gaglardi Way around 10:45 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 20. Mounties conducted a thorough search of the area on Monday. Identification found at the scene suggests the remains could be that of a person reported missing earlier this year, and RCMP are now waiting for the B.C. Coroners Service to confirm the identity.

While the investigation is still underway, RCMP say it’s unlikely foul play was the cause of death.

The B.C. Coroners Service confirmed they were trying to locate the person’s next of kin before releasing an identity.
