Residents get medals

Four residents in MLA Raj Chouhan's Burnaby-Edmonds riding will receive a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, according to Chouhan.

Chouhan sent a letter to Burnaby council about the recipients, who will be presented with the medals at a ceremony in January.

Burnaby Coun. Paul McDonell is being awarded one of the medals.

The others are going to Antonia Beck, executive director for South Burnaby Neighbourhood House; Mahjobeh Badakhsh, a human rights activist who graduated from Byrne Creek Secondary last summer; and Wanda Mulholland, a founding member of the Burnaby Task Force on Homelessness.

The medals, commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Queen's accession to the throne, are being awarded to 60,000 Canadians who have made contributions to their communities, regions, provinces or territories.

FOUR FESTS FUNDED

Four festivals in Burnaby are receiving funding from the City of Burnaby.

The 16th annual European Festival, taking place next May, was approved for a $25,000 grant.

The Art of Being Together, put on by L'Arche Foundation of Greater Vancouver next March, is receiving $8,000.

The Black History Month Celebration Festival, set for February, was granted $7,000.

The Nordic Spirit Heritage Festival, being held next April, was granted $4,030.

Burnaby council approved all of the grants.
