Looking to show off your motorcycle riding skills, or perhaps you’re in need of a refresher? The Burnaby RCMP is inviting residents to it’s first-ever motorcycle safety skills challenge later this month.
The event, a first for the local RCMP detachment, will have riders traverse a recertification course to test their riding skills. Mounties will be on hand throughout the course to guide riders and answer any safety questions they might have.
“It is our hope that riders will gain new skills and become more confident after taking the course,” noted a press release from the Burnaby RCMP.
The main focus of the event is to share up-to-date safety information with riders, especially when out riding at dawn or dusk, as well as information on new motorcycle laws. There will also be information on learner and new motorcycle licences.
In addition to the recertification course, RCMP officers with the motorcycle unit will be on hand to inspect motorcycles for any defects. Representatives with the Association of Injured Motorcyclists, B.C. Ambulance Service and ICBC will also be at the event handing out information.
The course is based on the RCMP motorcycle training officers are required to complete, which Burnaby RCMP Chief Supt. Dave Critchley, an avid motorcyclist himself, hopes will draw participants to the event.
“By sharing our expertise, we are offering motorcycle riders an opportunity to be as safe on the road as a trained RCMP motorcycle operator,” he said. “The Burnaby RCMP wants to give motorcyclists the skills and confidence they need to ride safely. It will be a unique opportunity for the public to train like we train and learn what we know and I encourage you to take the challenge.”
Participants who complete the challenge will be entered to win new safety gear, valued at $1,000.
The free event runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 27 at the Riverway Sports Complex, 8605 Nelson Ave.
