Rookie tops in NCAA

University of Denver defenceman Joey LaLeggia was named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association defensive player of the week on Jan. 17.

The Burnaby native recorded five points and a plus-2 rating, while dishing out six hits and stopping two shots on goals in a weekend sweep over Bemidji State last week.

LaLeggia scored a goahead goal and had one assist in a 6-3 win over Bemidji on Jan. 13. He also figured in on all three of Denver's goals in a comeback 3-2 win over BSU.

LaLeggia leads all NCAA Division I rookie defencemen with 24 points, including a nation-best nine goals and 15 assists.

The former Northwest Giant star is currently on a six-game points-scoring streak. LaLeggia currently ranks second among WCHA blueliners in goals and is third in total points.
