If you're a frequent Safeway shopper, chances are you'll be asked to donate two bucks in support of Muscular Dystrophy Canada the next time you're at the till.
The "Make Muscles Move" campaign launched July 31 and runs until Aug. 15.
Burnaby resident and local ambassador Micaela Evans, who has spinal muscular atrophy, was the recipient of a Muscular Dystrophy Canada grant last year that went towards a pair of robotic Wrex arms.
The 19-year-old said the equipment has significantly changed her day-to-day routine.
"I can only lift my arms a couple of inches off my armrest. The arms give me the ability to move them above my head," she said. "I can cook now, whereas before it was very dangerous because I had have to place my elbow on another part of the stove."
Evans also received a $5,000 Safeway scholarship, which she put towards her studies at Simon Fraser University, hoping to one day enter the field of journalism or public relations.
Jeannine Woolley, fundraising and volunteer coordinator with Muscular Dystrophy Canada, said she's anticipating another big year.
"Last year, the 4440 Hastings St. Burnaby Safeway raised $9,695. Nine-thousand or more would be fantastic."
Across Western Canada, just over $994,000 was collected during the 2013 campaign.
In return for their toonie, shoppers receive five Air Miles Reward Miles.
