An annual book sale at SFU’s Burnaby campus raised nearly $13,000 for the United Way last week.

Tables of books lined a hallway off the academic quadragle from Tuesday to Thursday, and book lovers were helped by a team of about 50 volunteers.

“I enjoy connecting people with books,” volunteer Percilla Groves, a former SFU librarian told the NOW between sales. “This is a way to connect a lot of people with a lot of books.”

Volunteers collect books all year and store them in a room off the West Mall.

Last week, 40 varsity football players helped unload the year’s bounty (19 pallets, about 650 boxes) from a forklift onto the tables.

“That’s a lot of books, and in 10 minutes they had them all off the pallets and onto the floor and tables,” said book sale coordinator Jeff Rudd.

The book sale is part of the university’s United Way campaign, which also includes bake sales and the Nov. 25 annual Faculty Smackdown, during which student-nominated faculty debate ridiculous questions for a good cause.
