Simon Fraser University has done the seemingly impossible by turning what would normally be considered the epitome of a boring academic presentation into an entertaining and enlightening experience.
The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) is a competition hosted by SFU's Graduate Studies, designed to help students explain their research in lively, engaging and accessible language in three minutes or less, using the aid of only one slide.
Originating in Australia, 3MT presentations are funny, enlightening, and an important way to enhance a graduate student's ability to speak to the community, according to a press release from SFU.
Think TED talks or Pecha Kucha events.
The finals of the competition will take place on Wednesday, March 6 at 5:30 p.m. in Images Theatre at SFU's Burnaby campus, with a panel of judges that includes SFU President Andrew Petter, Board of Governors Chair Brian E. Taylor, and Vice-Presidents Jon Driver, Pat Hibbitts and Mario Pinto.
Prizes range from $500 to $1,500, with the winner and runner-up selected by the judges, and the crowd voting for the winner of the People's Choice Award.
Admission is free, but registration is required.
