Simon Fraser University's senate is making concessions for any students wishing to attend the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada's national event in Vancouver this month.
The commission was set up to learn the truth about what happened to First Nations children in Canada's residential schools. The commission is hosting a series of events at the PNE in Vancouver from Sept. 16 to 22, and SFU's senate passed a motion encouraging instructors to let their students attend without risk of academic penalty.
The motion also encourages instructors to incorporate material about the history of residential schools and reconciliation into their course, where relevant.

Tickets for the raffle and the fair will be available for purchase at the school on Sept. 25. Suncrest is at 3883 Rumble St.
Happy 100th birthday
Second Street Community School is gearing up for a very special celebration - the school's 100th birthday. Second Street is hosting the event on Sept. 26 and 27, starting at 4 p.m., and everyone is invited.
"It's going to be really relaxed. I think it's going to be fun too because the stories are going to come out and people are going to start laughing," said Tammy Ozero, one of the volunteer organizers.
School trustee Larry Hayes is expected to attend, and there will be displays and tours of the school.
There will also be class photos from throughout the years, and a concession. Admission is free. If you have a Second Street School story, let the organizers know by emailing 100yearsatsecond [email protected].
There's also a Facebook page set up for the event. Go to Facebook.com and search for "Second Street Celebrates 100 Years."
