SFU to get new clean-tech research centre thanks to $2M federal funding

Simon Fraser University says the centre will help advance clean technologies.

A new research centre to advance clean technologies will be a reality for SFU thanks to federal funding.

A new research facility aimed at advancing clean technologies and supporting their commercialization has become a reality for Simon Fraser University (SFU)

On Monday (Nov. 7), Burnaby North-Seymour MP Terry Beech and Minister of International Development and Minister responsible for PacifiCan Harjit Sajjan announced more than $2 million in funding for the centre, which will be established at SFU's 4D LABS. 

The funding, given from the federal government's PacifiCan program, will also provide 4D LABS with new equipment and facility upgrades. 

New equipment includes an environmental electron microscope, X-ray characterization equipment and a particle size analyzer.

“The new Centre for Environmental and Food Analysis will train researchers with valuable skills for the agritech, clean tech and clean resources sectors, while expansion of our big data capacities will serve the growing Canadian research community," SFU vice president of research and international Dugan O'Neil said in a news release

"We are excited to further collaborations and make advancements in these innovative fields where SFU and Canada have demonstrated leadership."

SFU says The Centre for Environmental and Food Analysis will also help municipalities to adopt to green technologies. 

"Universities, like Simon Fraser University, are often the birthplace of ideas, such as innovations that leverage the power of clean technology,” Sajjan added. 

“The Government's support for the Centre for Environmental and Food Analysis (CEFA) will support the local clean technology ecosystem and help municipalities and Indigenous communities adopt green technologies."
