A man was taken to hospital after he allegedly set fire to his basement suite Saturday night.
The incident happened around 10:30 p.m. when a small fire started in one of the suites in a home in the 7300 block of 11th Avenue.
The fire caused some slight damage to the rear downstairs suite, where it started. While the other suites weren’t damaged, the tenants were taken to a motel by emergency support services because of lingering smoke in the home, assistant fire Chief Bryan Kirk told the NOW.
The man police believe started the fire was taken to hospital and treated for smoke inhalation. He was apprehended by responding officers under the Mental Health Act, according to the Burnaby RCMP. The act gives police officers the authority to detain persons experiencing a mental health-related issue and could be a danger to themselves and others.
None of the other tenants, including a family of six, were injured in the fire.
No charges have been laid at this time, according to the Burnaby RCMP.
