There's a brouhaha growing in the city over the possible future of the Burnaby Selects soccer club.
At issue is a recent motion by the Burnaby District Youth Soccer Association that would affiliate all local metro teams into the 4District Metro Select league for the upcoming 2014/15 season.
That move, if successful, would likely leave the Burnaby Selects Soccer Club without a league to play in.
The issue led the Burnaby Selects executive to pen a letter to the B.C. Soccer Association asking the provincial body to step in and help the opposing sides work out their differences.
A call to the provincial association was unreturned.
The District has been on the record since late last year, asking the Selects group to grant greater involvement on its board to feeder clubs - Burnaby Girls, Cliff Avenue United, Royal City Youth, South Burnaby Metro Club and Wesburn soccer clubs.
An agreement on the issue was believed to have been tentatively reached in January, subject to the approval of all parties.
However, that understanding appears to have suffered a setback at a later District meeting on Feb. 17, when a further motion was brought forward to go ahead with the latest move to bring all local metro teams under the same association umbrella.
The Burnaby Selects are asking for a meeting with B.C. Soccer, the District and Burnaby club chairs to help reach a settlement.
As a result of the existing uncertainty, the Selects posted an update on their website www.burnabyselects.com that all boys' and girls' team tryouts have been postponed until further notice.
