The City of Burnaby ended up closing some roads on Wednesday as an atmospheric river hit the city – with more heavy rain predicted in the coming days.
“Heavy rainfall is causing some localized flooding around Burnaby,” said the city in a tweet.
Road closures due to flooding:
Still Creek Av from Westminster Av to Douglas Rd
Westminster Av from Still Creek Av to Regent St
“Watch for crews helping to direct traffic,” said the city.
To report flooding, call 604-294-7200.
Environment Canada said up to 100 mm of rain fell in Burnaby and Metro Vancouver, with some areas seeing even more of the wet stuff.
A rainfall warning was in effect Wednesday (Jan. 12) and the federal agency cautioned people to be aware of localized flooding as another atmospheric river has arrived with lots of rain.
"Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Don't approach washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts," stated Environment Canada.
The concern for flooding is due in part to melting snow, as snow levels will rise.
"Snowmelt over higher elevations as freezing levels climb will contribute to runoff which may result in high stream levels and localized flooding," warns Environment Canada.
Rain intensity decreased overnight and today, Jan. 13, is only expected to see some showers.
