The B.C. SPCA has honoured Burnaby's Claudia Richter as veterinarian of the year. Richter, who operates the Burnaby Veterinary Hospital, received the award on May 31.

"Dr. Richter originally supported the B.C. SPCA by volunteering to examine animals in our care at the shelter and then continued her generous support after purchasing her own practice in Burnaby by providing medical care free of charge," said the B.C. SPCA's Lorie Chortyk in a press release.

According to the B.C. SPCA, Richter has provided more than $15,000 in free medical care for animals, she's raised $1,700 for the society and she also encourages prospective pet owners to consider adoption as a first option.

"Her passion for animals and the B.C. SPCA has inspired her team members, veterinarian colleagues and her community," said Burnaby SPCA branch manager Ryan Voutilainen.

Richter said she was overwhelmed, humbled and honoured to win the award and that she helps because it feels good. Richter and her partner have adopted two dogs from the SPCA, and she said she feels the need to give back.

"I have two dogs, and we've always believed it's good to give a dog in need a home," she told the NOW. "These dogs, no one takes care of them, and the surgeries we do, it's either us doing it or these animals (may) get put down."

Richter also wanted to share the recognition.

"This is group effort. This is all of us kind of working together. It's my entire hospital," she said.
