Station Square Cinemas, which showed first-run, second-run and foreign films on its seven screens, is no more.
The movie theatre, which opened on Dec. 15, 1988, closed its doors this Monday.
Cineplex Inc. chose to close the theatre after its lease expired at the location, according to Pat Marshall, Cineplex's vice-president of communications and investor relations.
"Those assets do not really reflect the quality of assets that we want our theatre guests to experience," she said. "They're old, you know, the sloped floor theatres. We're really moving towards the quality stadium seating with the new technology and digital projection."
The 15 staff members that worked at the theatre have been offered jobs at Cineplex's other locations, she added.
The company is not looking at opening any other locations in Burnaby right now, according to Marshall.
"The Metropolis theatre is more than able to handle that demand at this point," she said. "But you never know."
Cineplex bought the theatre from Famous Players in 2005.
The closure leaves Burnaby with two theatres - SilverCity at Metropolis at Metrotown and Dolphin Cinemas on Hastings Street.
The building that houses the Dolphin is up for redevelopment.
The developer, Heights Entertainment, is partnering with the Vancouver Resource Society on the project, which would include two levels of commercial and office space, and two levels of residential space, according to the application that was passed by council this summer.
However, the theatre is currently still open and screening movies.
The Station Square building is also up for redevelopment, and council passed the rezoning application for the project in June.
The design for the new Station Square includes commercial space at ground level, offices on the next two storeys and five residential towers ranging in height from 35 to 57 storeys.
