Nearly one year ago local police responded to shots fired in a quiet neighbourhood near Robert Burnaby Park. When they arrived, they found a 46-year-old man bleeding – he did not survive his injuries.

The shooting happened around 10: 30 p.m. on Aug. 10, 2014, in the area of Second Street and 19th Avenue. Neighbours in the area called police when they heard gunshots, but by the time Burnaby RCMP arrived, only the victim, Jahanbakhsh Meshkati, remained at the scene.

Meshkati, originally believed to be from Alberta, was identified two days after the incident. Investigators with the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team took over the case and determined he had, in fact, last been living in the Toronto area before arriving in the Lower Mainland.

A year later, the investigation is ongoing, but police wouldn’t elaborate on what, if anything, they’ve discovered about Meshkati’s shooting death, according to the homicide investigation team.

“At this point, I am not able to reveal more information as it could affect the investigation. As always we ask that the public who have information about this incident contact police or Crime Stoppers, it is through the assistance of witnesses that we are able to solve these crimes,” Sgt. Stephanie Ashton, spokesperson for the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, wrote in an email to the Burnaby NOW.

Investigators believe the shooting was targeted.

Anyone with information on this homicide is asked to contact the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team by calling their tipline at 1-877-551-4448 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
