Yuzhe Zhong lost her husband tragically and the public has come to her aid.

Andy Tran was killed May 27 at his restaurant, the Royal Oak Sushi House, leaving Zhong and their two children, two and five, without a husband and father.

When SUCCESS, a local agency decided to set up a trust fund for Zhong and her family last month, they couldn't have known how charitable the community would be.

On Thursday, the organization announced that almost $35,000 has been collected for the grieving family.

"I am very grateful to the community for the support I received at this very difficult time," Zhong said in a press release. "I thank each and every donor who gave donations. I also thank the many persons at SUCCESS and (the) SUCCESS Foundation for the assistance they provided to me to deal with the aftermath of this tragedy."

Maggie Ip, chair of the SUCCESS Foundation said: "The outpouring financial support to the family within one month shows that our Metro Vancouver community does care for each other. In addition to the management of the trust fund, we shall provide ongoing support and assistance to the family. We have supported the visa application of Mrs. Tran's mother, who resides in China, to come to Vancouver to help to take care of the young children."

Tran was gunned down May 27 by former security guard Angus Mitchell, who was later killed by police. Mitchell was targeting Tran's waitress, Chinh Diem Huynh, who was also killed in the deadly shooting at the sushi restaurant.

Mitchell also shot and wounded his former landlord May 29 before dying in a shoot-out with police May 30.

SUCCESS CEO Thomas Tam said the agency also appealed through the media to Huynh's family to see if they needed support, but the agency did not hear back from them.

He said Zhong called SUCCESS after her husband's death looking for support and counselling.
