Burnaby Mounties arrested a 22-year-old man who allegedly shot and killed a Surrey resident while attempting to break into the man’s home.

Shortly before 2 a.m. Monday, Burnaby RCMP were called to an apartment building in the 7300 block of Macpherson Avenue near Burnaby South Secondary following a report that a man with a gun was attempting to break into the apartment building, according to a media release from the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team.

The description of the suspect and his vehicle provided to the Burnaby RCMP matched that of a suspect believed to be responsible for the shooting death of a man in Surrey only hours earlier.

Just before midnight on Sunday, July 12, a suspect broke into a home in the 16500 block of 64th Avenue. The resident, 42-year-old Colin Hill, tried to stop the suspect from entering, but an altercation began and Hill was shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene, the release stated.

The suspect fled before police arrived.

When Burnaby RCMP realized that their break-and-enter suspect was also the suspect in the fatal Surrey shooting, officers closed off the area and managed to arrest him without incident, according to the release.

“Surrey RCMP moved quickly to get information out to all Lower Mainland police departments. As a result, Burnaby officers had the information they required in order to execute an arrest and keep the public safe from further harm by this individual,” Sgt. Stephanie Ashton, spokesperson for the homicide team, said in the release.

The suspect, who is known to police, will likely be charged with second degree murder, according to police. He is schedule to appear in court on July 14, at which time his name will be released.
