Burnaby police standoff ends in arrest of 46-year-old man

A man was arrested and two youths taken from a home unharmed on Portland Street in South Burnaby after an hours' long police incident Tuesday.

A 46-year-old man was taken into custody after a police standoff in a residential area in Burnaby Tuesday.

Officers were called to a home on Portland Street near Royal Oak just after 8 a.m. for reports of a distraught male inside a home, possibly with other people inside, according to Burnaby RCMP.

The Lower Mainland Integrated Emergency Response Team was called in “due to safety concerns,” and residents were asked to avoid the area.

A section of Portland Street between Royal Oak and Roslyn avenues was blocked off in both directions for several hours during the incident.

ERT officers surrounded the house and a negotiator was engaged, according to police.

At around 12:15 p.m., after conversations with police, a 46-year-old man stepped outside of the single-family home and was taken into custody, police said.

Two youths who were inside the home were brought out safely and unharmed, according to Burnaby RCMP.
