Burnaby RCMP have arrested a 16-year-old teen from Surrey for a shooting at a Burnaby apartment in November.

Local Mounties believe they have the suspect responsible for a shooting at a Burnaby apartment in November that sent the victim to hospital.

On Tuesday, Burnaby RCMP announced two attempted murder charges against a 16-year-old teen from Surrey, for two separate incidents.

On Nov. 19, police responded to a shooting in the 7100 block of 14 Avenue. A 19-year-old man was found with gunshot wounds. The victim was taken to hospital, treated and later released.

Burnaby RCMP’s serious crime unit identified the suspect and issued a warrant for his arrest on Dec. 16.

Meanwhile, on Dec. 20, Vancouver police were called to a shooting in the 2200 block of Herman Drive where a 42-year-old woman had been shot. The woman was taken to hospital and continues to receive treatment for her injuries.

Then on Jan. 6, the Burnaby RCMP’s strike force and high risk offenders unit arrested the suspect in Surrey. A loaded handgun was also seized during the arrest.

Other than a press release, the Mounties are offering few details about the case, the suspect, any connection between the victims, or a motive.

“Once this suspect had been identified, our officers worked hard to locate him,” said Burnaby RCMP Insp. Sanjaya Wijayakoon in a statement. “His actions were obviously of concern to the police, so it was critical for us to find him and arrest him as soon as possible. The RCMP worked closely with Vancouver police to bring about a successful conclusion to this file.”

The teen, who can’t be identified because he is a young offender, remains in custody, pending a bail hearing in Vancouver Provincial Youth Court on Wednesday.
