A teen with a history of drug offences faces more charges after allegedly speeding away from members of B.C.’s anti-gang squad during a routine traffic stop in Burnaby last month.

On the morning of March 21, the Uniform Gang Enforcement Team stopped a vehicle police described as being associated with trafficking and “suspicious occurrences.”

The vehicle’s registered owner had an active class 7 driver’s license but no “N” visible, according to a Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of British Columbia (CFSEU-BC) press release.

Officers followed the vehicle a short distance to find a safe place to stop, according to police, but when they got out of their vehicle, the driver sped off.

Police later found the vehicle parked at a dead-end street, where they arrested the driver.

Officers also detected an extremely strong smell of marijuana emanating from the vehicle, according to the press release, and a search of the vehicle turned up a baggie of marijuana in the glove compartment, three cell phones, and a marijuana grinder.

A search of the area also turned up a baggie marijuana and a quantity of what was suspected to be cocaine, which officers believe was tossed from the vehicle.

Jaskaran Johal, 19, has now been charged with one count each of flight from a peace officer, dangerous operation of motor vehicle and possession of a controlled substance (crack-cocaine) for the purpose of trafficking.
