A campfire ban will go into effect starting at noon on Wednesday, July 18th (tomorrow).
All open fires will be prohibited in the Coastal Region except for the fog zone (West Coast of Vancouver Island) and Haida Gwaii.
Fires of all types will be prohibited along with certain devices such as tiki torches, fireworks, sky lanterns, exploding targets, and burning barrels.
CSA-rated camp stoves will be permitted, as will portable campfire apparatus that burn propane or charcoal, as long as the flame does not exceed 15cm.
Donna MacPherson with the Coastal Fire Centre says that we’ve reached the threshold for dryness in the region and that “continued drying of the forest” from sustained periods of time without rain resulted in the ban being put into place.
