A “rookie” ballplayer is being praised by her coach for something outside of her skill at sports.

The Burnaby Oakeys are getting mural painted made by an 18-year-old player Katherine Wang to show her appreciation for the club, according to coach Tim Linklater.

“I wanted to show off what a talented artist she is,” Linklater told the NOW.

Wang is in the finishing stages of painting a mural on the side of a shipping contain/storage bin located at Squint Lake Park in Burnaby.

Wang recently graduated from Burnaby Central High School and is passionate about art. She joined the U19 team this season as a rookie and grew to love the sport and her teammates, which is what prompted her to offer to paint the mural, Linklater said.

Linklater said Wang’s mom passed away a year ago and she spent that anniversary painting the mural.

“I think painting really helps her through the grieving process,” Linklater said.
