This truck had so many defects it actually broke down during a Burnaby police check

The Burnaby RCMP’s traffic enforcement branch launched a full-court press in August aimed at getting unsafe commercial trucks off the road. That included a four-day blitz that saw dozens of vehicles flagged for serious violations.

The Burnaby RCMP’s traffic enforcement branch launched a full-court press in August aimed at getting unsafe commercial trucks off the road.

That included a four-day blitz that saw dozens of vehicles flagged for serious violations.

But nothing quite like what officers saw on Friday night in Burnaby.

One officer stopped a commercial truck and found seven violations and eight mechanical defects, according to a tweet by Burnaby RCMP.

And then the truck literally “broke down” during the inspection, said police, leading to it “being removed from the road until it is deemed to be safe.”

Police found similar infractions during its four-day inspection sweep in Burnaby, with police handing out more tickets on the final day than the number of vehicles they checked, with 30 commercial vehicles inspected and 42 violation tickets issued. Out of the 30 vehicles inspected, 10 were identified as unsafe to continue and removed from the roadway, and 25 mechanical defects identified.

This is how the other days went:

  • One day three, a total of 65 commercial trucks were inspected, with 16 of them deemed “unsafe to continue and removed from the roadway,” according to the Burnaby RCMP. From those 65 vehicles, 55 violation tickets were issued and 51 mechanical defects were found.
  • One day two of the blitz, 36 commercial vehicles were inspected and 11 of them were identified as being unsafe to continue and removed from the roadway, according to Burnaby RCMP. Police issued 33 violation tickets and inspectors identified 36 mechanical defects.
  • This followed the first day of inspections on Gaglardi Way. Out of 47 trucks inspected, 40 received violation tickets, said police, and 20 were deemed “unsafe” to continue on local roadways due to various mechanical issues or problems with unsecured loads that couldn’t be immediately rectified. A total of 149 mechanical defects were detected by inspectors on the first day, said police.
