Tigers take game

Duo of Burnaby women's teams face off in soccer action with Selects losing to Burnaby Tigers

The good news was one Burnaby team won on Sept. 9 at Cariboo Oval.

The bad news for Burnaby Selects head coach Doug Wilson was his team lost 2-0 to their club mates, the Burnaby Tigers.

"We're both part of the Burnaby Canadians and it was a good match between girls that have been playing with and against each other for the past seven years," said Wilson.

The teams, which feature women 19 and older, is a step below the Metro Women's Premier division.

"They're a good team and we had to play really hard just to keep up with them," said Wilson, who said his squad only had 12 players for the match. And when one got hurt, it meant his job got really easy: he had no substitutes left and the 11 on the pitch had to finish the game.

Wilson said his central defenders and midfield, led by Sandy Young, played valiantly.

"Sandy works so hard and she just fights for everything,"

said Wilson. "I bet if a train was bearing down on her, she'd still challenge it."

Wilson knows it's difficult for the women to juggle soccer with the real world.

"A lot of these women have school, jobs, families and responsibilities," he said. "Just getting them out and playing together is good. ... A lot of them are good friends so that helps."
