The kids are back in school, the days are getting shorter and the September rush of activities is in full swing. It's time for Burnaby residents to get out and enjoy the best of the city before fall comes in full force.
1 Get gardening at the South Burnaby Garden Club's annual fall fair, taking place at the Bonsor Recreation Centre at 6550 Bonsor Ave. on Saturday, Sept. 8 from 1 to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 9 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. It's free to attend this event, which will have many amazing exhibits, children's entries, colouring contests, potato contest, door prizes, a floral arts demonstration, a baking, produce and preserves sale and refreshment booth. 2 Get listening on Sunday, Sept. 9 at the Michael J. Fox Theatre at 2 p.m. for the opening concert of the 2012/2013 season for the Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra. The orchestra will feature Maestro Hsieh with four of Vancouver's young elite musicians: Siu-Fan Yiu on the violin; Ron Mann on the oboe; Luke Kim on the cello; and Tristian Lambert on the bassoon as they play Haydn's Sinfonie Concertante. The orchestra will also perform works by Beethoven and Mendelssohn, as well as a brand-new commissioned work by composer-in residence Alain Maynard.
The theatre's located at 7373 MacPherson Ave. Doors open at 1: 15 p.m. and the concert starts at 2 p.m.
3 Get walking and running for the Rhythm of Life: The Run and Walk for Everyone at Burnaby Lake Park, at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 9. The event includes distances of 10 kilometres, five-km and a one-km family stroll, along with a barbecue burger lunch and live entertainment.
Kids are free, proceeds go to support Burnaby Hospital and its goal of purchasing a $65,000 adult ventilator. For more info, go to www. RhythmofLifeRun.ca.
4 Get dancing on Friday, Sept. 7 and Saturday, Sept. 8 with The Bobcats at the Admiral Pub and Grill at 4125 Hastings St. The Bobcats come highly recommended by Burnaby NOW sports editor Tom Berridge, who has been known to cut a rug or two while the Bobcats are playing. 5 Get watching high school football as St. Thomas More Collegiate hosts Holy Cross in pre-season play at Burnaby Lake West at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 7. The Knights are led by rangy wideout Giovanni Trasolini, running back Sebastien Adugalski and Grade 11 running back Jalen Jana. Get out and cheer for the Knights, who are a preseason favourite to win the boys AAA football championship.
