January's in full swing, so it's time to get out and enjoy some new things to do in Burnaby. We're continuing with our popular feature - our staff's Top 5 (Or More) Things To Do This Weekend, and this week, there's a good mix of activities in the city.
1 Get listening to the Burnaby Clef Society recital on Sunday, Jan. 20 in Studio 103 at 2 p.m. in the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts at 6450 Deer Lake Ave.
This performance features the future stars of the world stage at a recital of the always exciting performers from the Donna Fishwick Piano Studio.
There's free parking, and refreshments will be served at intermission.
2 Get watching Gianni Schicchi and Pagliacci, playing at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 19 at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts at 6450 Deer Lake Ave. Young up-and-coming professional opera singers perform these two famous one-act operas, directed by David Adams with musical direction by Michael Onwood.
The first short opera features Puccini's one-act comic tour de force Gianni Schicchi. This is a story of greedy relatives fighting over the will of their recently deceased wealthy patriarch, Buoso Donatti, only to be tricked out of their inheritance by the ingenious scheming of Gianni Schicchi.
The second opera portrays the tragedy of Pagliacci, Leoncavallo's celebrated and heartbreaking story of Canio, the clown who makes people laugh, while he himself is suffering. The ensemble features tenor Martin Sadd and baritone Aaron Durand of the Vancouver Opera Young Artist Programme. Joining them will be soprano Chloé Hurst, returning after her triumph as Mimi in the Burnaby Lyric Opera 2012 production of La Bohème. Baritone Andrey Andreychik makes his debut with the opera.
The show runs from Jan. 19 to 26, and tickets are $32 for adults and $27 for students and seniors, and available at the Shadbolt box office or via phone at 604-205-3000.

3 Get informed on Friday, Jan. 18 with the 7 p.m. documentary showing of White Water Black Gold, presented by BROKE (Burnaby Residents Opposing Kinder Morgan Expansion) Filmmaker David Lavallee will introduce the documentary at the Capitol Hill Community Centre at 361 Howard Ave. Admission is by donation.
4 Get bottle collecting on Saturday, Jan. 19 for a bottle drive, organized by the Grade 9 boys' and Grade 10 girls' basketball teams at Burnaby Central. For more info, email bcss. [email protected] with your address and phone number so that volunteers can come by and pick up your recyclables. People can also drop off their empties at the school at 6100 Deer Lake Pkwy. between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
5 Get buying gently used items at the St. Stephen's Church thrift shop monthly sale on Saturday, Jan. 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 9887 Cameron St. There is a large selection of clothing for the whole family, especially winter styles. Many household items, books and toys for the children of all ages are also on sale. Some small appliances and electronics are also available, as is a selection of art work.
