Tri-City basketball all-stars named to B.C.'s roster for 2022 Canada Summer Games

Lauren Clements, Cerys Merton and Brooke Kendal will look to get the province back on the podium in Niagara, Ont.

A trio of Tri-City talent is set to represent the province on the court in Niagara, Ont., later this year.

Terry Fox Secondary's Lauren Clements and Cerys Merton, as well as Riverside Secondary's Brooke Kendal, will lace up for Team B.C. at the 2022 Canada Summer Games.

All three were named to the U18 girls roster last Tuesday (April 26) after displaying an incredible senior season with their respective Port Coquitlam programs.

Clements made her case this year as one of the top high-school basketball players in Canada as her selection follows her MVP performance at the 2022 BC AAAA girls championships.

She tallied 102 points over four games for the number-three ranked Ravens, including a personal-best 45 in the semi-final against Okanagan-Mission.

The UFV Cascades commit posted 17 points and 15 rebounds in the all-PoCo provincial final with a 77-75 victory.

Meanwhile, teammate Merton rallied to seven points, nine rebounds, six assists and one steal.

Merton, who's committed to playing at UBC in the fall, was named the AAAA provincials best defensive player and a second-team all-star.

On the other side, Kendal led the Rapids with 21 points and 10 rebounds in the final. She's set to hit the collegiate hardwood with the University of Victoria.

All three athletes are also members of local basketball clubs: Clements with Excel, and Merton and Kendal representing VK.

Clements, Merton and Kendal will compete in hopes of bringing a gold medal around their necks to B.C. from the Canada Summer Games, taking place from Aug. 6 to 21.

The 28th annual event was postponed from 2021 due to the then state of the COVID-19 pandemic.

B.C.'s women's basketball team finished eighth at the 2017 games with a record of 2-4, four years after claiming silver in 2013.

Nine others complete the 12-player U18 girls' roster — most are from the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley with a mix of Prince George, the Okanagan and Vancouver Island.
