Two businesses with worksites in Richmond were fined by Worksafe BC for separate cases of an asbestos infestation and failing worksite compliance.

Delta Hazmat Ltd. was fined $20,000 for not protecting a Richmond worksite from cross-contamination during abatement work, according to WorkSafe BC.

The company had conducted an asbestos abatement at a pre-1990 house slated for demolition but an assessment found debris from ceiling texture coat, an asbestos-containing material (ACM), throughout the building's structure and surfaces.

"The firm failed to safely contain or remove hazardous materials, a high-risk violation, and failed to have a qualified person ensure that all hazardous materials were safely contained or removed," said WorkSafe BC.

These were both repeated violations.

Worksafe BC also inspected another of the firm's worksites after it issued an asbestos clearance letter and found window putty, an identified ACM, still in place.

Meanwhile, Mondiale Development Ltd, was fined $21,198.98 for failing to maintain and post an accurate site drawing to establish and maintain "a system of regulatory compliance."

Mondiale was the prime contractor for the construction of mixed-use towers in Richmond, but the firm's site map did not "reflect the layout of the project's current phase," such as the including the location of fair aid facilities and muster stations.

"The firm also failed to conduct a first aid assessment and to develop and implement first aid procedures. In addition, the firm failed to ensure rescue and evacuation procedures were developed," said WorkSafe BC, adding these were all repeated violations.
