Two lives have been lost among close to 50 confirmed COVID-19 cases at the George Derby Centre in Burnaby, a long-term care facility still under an outbreak declaration.

According to the updated Weekly COVID-19 Long Term Care, Assisted Living and Independent Living Outbreak Report released by the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC), as of Feb. 1, 2022, 47 infections have been detected to date involving 23 residents and 24 staff members.

The two deaths reported involved residents.

Fraser Health said they proactively implemented the following measures at the site:

  • Social visits are restricted in the affected areas of the facility. Essential visits can continue
  • Staff and residents movement in the affected areas of the facility has been modified to minimize exposure to others
  • Cleaning and infection control measures have been further enhanced
  • Residents, families and staff are being notified
  • Twice a day screening of all staff and residents is taking place
  • Additional testing and screening is in place to support monitoring of disease control

George Derby Centre was subject to an outbreak on Nov. 8, 2021, when there were 10 confirmed cases.

The outbreak included 24 cases involving 16 residents and eight staff members. One death was also recorded.

In November of 2020, the centre endured a tragic outbreak with 36 lives lost among 109 confirmed infections.
