Upcoming camps for kids in the city

Plenty of options still around for the rest of the summer in both Burnaby and New West

Summer's a great time for kids to explore and discover new interests via summer camp.

Whether it's sports, arts, culture, science or any activity you can think of under the sun, organizations in Burnaby and New Westminster offer a multitude of summer camp options at affordable prices.

Here's a list of some local offerings (note that times, dates and rates are subject to change):

? The Urban Academy in New Westminster has offered many different camps for kids during the summer.

Touted as some of the best summer camps in the Lower Mainland, Urban Academy offers summertime learning and fun to children aged five to 17.

There are two sessions left of the academy's Dynamic Dance! camp, for aged eight to 12 and 13 to 17. Each costs $139.

Students will learn jumping, timing and unique combinations to the style, with each class ending with a dance routine. Styles taught include ballet, jazz, hip hop, modern and African dance.

The session for kids aged eight to 12 runs from Aug. 6 to 10, 9 a.m. to noon.

The session for those aged 13 to 17 runs from Aug. 6 to 10, 12: 30 to 3: 30 p.m.

? Burnaby Village Museum offers heritage camps that allow students to experience history first-hand.

Each week includes games, activities, crafts and lots of carousel rides.

With a large meadow for energetic outdoor games and unique indoor spaces for quieter activities, the museum is an ideal spot for hosting summer camps. Each camp is $150 per week.

The summer camps are designed for children aged five to 12. Each week has a special theme or focus and is programmed for a specific age group.

Kids can have fun with Toy Adventures, running from Aug. 7 to 10; discover Burnaby's multicultural roots at Kids Around the World camp, learning about Japanese, Chinese, Indian and First Nations communities from Aug. 13 to 17; or play with their food during Fun with Food Week, running from Aug. 20 to 24.

Girls can enjoy dressing up and having tea parties as part of A Little Girl's Life, camp, from Aug. 27 to 31.

? Burnaby Pacific Grace Church, at 3883 Triumph St., is running a summer kids' camp from Aug. 20 to 24, as well.

? The Burnaby golf department is running a youth par-3 summer golf league.

Registration starts at $19.95 plus tax for early registration.

Youths aged 12 to 18 can take part in instructional clinics put on by Burnaby's CPGA-certified staff, and pitch-and-putt at either Kensington or Central Park.

League B runs on Wednesday afternoons including today and Aug. 8, and League C runs Aug 15, 22 and 29. Register by calling 604-297-4493.

This is but a small number of the summer camps still available to kids in Burnaby and New Westminster this August.
