A 26-year-old Burnaby man is dead after falling from a cliff near Harrison Lake on Saturday.

Jason George was hiking on the east side of Harrison Lake near Rainbow Falls, when the accident happened. While climbing a cliff to get a better view of the falls, George fell, landing in the river below, according to the B.C. Coroners Service.

One of George’s friends attempted to climb down to the plateau, but he got stuck on the cliff. RCMP along with Kent Harrison Search and Rescue and paramedics were called to the scene around 5:20 p.m., according to a RCMP media release.

They were able to rescue the man stranded on the cliff, but George could not be saved.

“The back country, although beautiful, is dangerous.  Police remind everyone who enjoys these remote regions of our area to always remain aware of the dangers nature presents,” said Cpl. Mike Rail, spokesperson for the RCMP’s Fraser Valley Regional Detachment, in the release.

George had been camping with three other men at Cogburn Beach.

The RCMP and coroners service continue to investigate the incident. Foul play is not suspected. No further information is available at this time.
