[UPDATE] Burnaby man struck by vehicle dies in hospital

A Burnaby man is dead after a car hit him while crossing Oakland Street this morning (Thursday). The 80-year-old pedestrian was crossing the street around 6:30 a.m. when a car travelling down Oakland Street hit him, causing serious injuries.

A Burnaby man is dead after a car hit him while crossing Oakland Street this morning (Thursday).

The 80-year-old pedestrian was crossing the street around 6:30 a.m. when a car travelling down Oakland Street hit him, causing serious injuries. He was taken to Royal Columbian Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, said Cpl. Dave Reid of the Burnaby RCMP.

Police closed Oakland Street between Elgin and Dufferin avenues following the accident, and it remains closed at this time.

Reid told the NOW earlier today officers would remain on scene to conduct the investigation, which will now require more detailed work due to the fatality to determine what happened.

Burnaby RCMP won't be releasing the victim's name until they've noified his next-of-kin.
