A man who was taken to hospital after Burnaby RCMP found him to be in medical distress on Wednesday morning has died.
The man was transported to hospital by B.C. Ambulance Services after the incident involving a Burnaby RCMP officer on Wednesday and died on Thursday, according to a statement posted by the British Columbia’s Independent Investigations Office.
The office took over the investigation into the incident that happened early Wednesday. Just before 6 a.m. on Sept. 18, Burnaby Mounties were called to a residence in the 4200-block of Cambridge Street, north of Hastings Street.
According to the investigators, while responding to the call the RCMP officer encountered a man “who appeared to be in some distress.”
“He (the man) was placed in the back of a police vehicle. His condition deteriorated and B.C. Ambulance was called,” said Owen Court of the Independent Investigations Office.
Cambridge Street between Carleton and Rosser avenues was closed by Burnaby RCMP while investigators combed through the scene and spoke with surrounding residents.
Investigators at the Independent Investigations Office – a civilian body mandated to investigate police-related incidents of death or serious harm – were alerted of the incident at 7:17 a.m.
Early reports on social media suggested the incident had been a shooting, resulting in a death, but the Independent Investigations Office stated this was not the case.
