A 20-year-old driver is under investigation after a fatal single-vehicle collision in Burnaby that killed a 20-year-old woman early Wednesday morning.

At 3:10 a.m., police responded to reports of a single-vehicle crash in the 5800 block of Byrne Road, according to a Burnaby RCMP news release.

Upon arrival, officers located two women in the vehicle.

The 20-year-old passenger died at the scene, police said, and the 20-year-old driver was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Both are Burnaby residents.

Investigators believe the car slammed into a pole, demolishing the vehicle, and both alcohol and speed are believed to have been "causal factors" in the collision, according to the release.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or might have dashcam video in the area when the collision took place is asked to contact Burnaby RCMP at 604-646-9999.

To remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

Police blocked off Byrne Road in both directions between Marine Way and the Marine Drive/Southridge Drive intersection after the crash.

The street is expected to remain closed until after 2 p.m.
