Two men arrested in Burnaby Sunday were federal parolees unlawfully at large, according to Surrey RCMP.

At about 6 p.m., heavily armed officers from Burnaby RCMP, Surrey RCMP and the Vancouver Police Department surrounded a number of buildings and homes on Sperling Avenue and Elwell Street.

They closed in on a house on Sperling Avenue and arrested two Vancouver men, aged 25 and 30.

Surrey Mounties were at the house to execute a search warrant as part of an ongoing Surrey RCMP investigation, according to spokesperson Cpl. Elenore Sturko.

But the two men were also already being investigated by Vancouver police for being unlawfully at large, she said.

“They were already under investigation, going to be arrested, and we already were going to be doing a search warrant over at this residence,” she said.

Sturko said she couldn’t comment on whether the men were also being investigated in connection with the ongoing Surrey matter or what the nature of that investigation is.

But Burnaby RCMP, who assisted in the operation, said Sunday there is “no danger to the public” in relation to the incident.
