B.C.’s police watchdog is investigating a serious rollover crash involving a Burnaby RCMP pickup truck and a “suspicious” white van Tuesday night.

At about 11:10 p.m., Burnaby RCMP patrolling in a marked police vehicle spotted a suspicious van parked at the tennis court parking lot off Patterson Avenue, according to an RCMP press release.

The driver of the van then allegedly drove away, over the grass and off the curb.

Police did not pursue the van but did share a description with other officers in the area, according to the RCMP press release.

At about 11:35 p.m., police say the suspect van was travelling eastbound on Dorset Street when it crashed with another marked police vehicle travelling northbound on Macpherson Avenue.

Emergency crews were called to the scene shortly after.

Firefighters helped treat one injured RCMP officer and a man who had been ejected from the rolled-over van, according to the Burnaby Fire Department.

Occupants from both vehicles were transported to hospital.

Mounties involved in the crash have been assessed with non-life threatening injuries, according to police.

The male driver of the van suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash is now being investigated by the Independent Investigations Office (IIO), the B.C. body that investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death.

Burnaby RCMP will also conduct its own investigation in the crash.

Anyone who witnessed this incident is asked to contact the IIO at 1-855-446-8477.
