Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services rescued a dog from a building located at 215 West 2nd Avenue. The dog was transported to an emergency animal hospital.

A dog was transported to an emergency animal hospital after a fire broke out in a Vancouver apartment building this week.

Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services (VFRS) responded to a blaze on the eleventh floor of a building located at 215 West 2nd Avenue just before 4 p.m. on Tuesday (May 10).

VFRS Asst. Chief Richard Warnock told Vancouver Is Awesome in a phone interview that no one was home when the fire broke out but there was a dog in the suite.

"The dog was brought out by our guys who did some work on the dog with oxygen and it was transported via VPD to an emergency animal shelter at West 7th [Avenue] at Alberta [Street]," he explained.

Approximately 26 firefighters responded to the first-alarm fire and the damage was contained to one suite; there were no injuries or deaths. The current status of the dog is unknown.

The cause of the fire was accidental but is still under investigation, said Warnock.

"Highly trained firefighters combined with working sprinklers made a significant difference," notes the VFRS in a tweet.

Fire Captain Karen Fry shared a video of the blaze on social media.
